The state of scientific research with AI

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said: “The most important impact [of AGI] will be accelerating the rate of scientific discovery, which I believe is what contributes most to improving quality of life.”

Researchers are cautiously embracing AI for writing, editing, and reviewing papers, with many expecting it to be standard soon.

AI could automate tedious tasks, speed up research, and reduce human bias.

  • “About 72% want to use AI for preparing manuscripts in the next two years.”
  • “Early-career researchers showed greater interest than did more senior colleagues in using AI for writing grant applications and finding potential collaborators.”

But many researchers don’t know how to integrate AI into their workflow.

  • “Although 64% of respondents are open to using AI for complex tasks, the majority thinks humans still outperform AI”
  • “Only 45% of the first wave of respondents said that they had actually used AI to help with their research.”

AI-powered research assistants will be standard in every lab, significantly increasing research quantity.

But, high quality research likely sill requires human fact checking and creative thinking.
